Learn the sky the way sailors did: one anchor pattern, a steady hand, and patience.
You do not need a telescope to begin. This primer teaches you to read the night by season, to pick
binoculars that suit your eyes, to protect your night vision, and to work out what any eyepiece
will actually show.

Reading the sky by season
The sky is a clock and a calendar. Earth's spin carries every star westward at 15° per hour, and its
orbit shifts the whole scene about 1° per night, so a star rises roughly four minutes earlier each
evening and two hours earlier each month. Learn one anchor pattern per season and the rest follows by
star-hopping.
Start north. The two stars at the end of the Big Dipper's bowl, Dubhe and Merak, point to Polaris about
five bowl-widths away. Polaris barely moves, and its altitude above the horizon equals your latitude.
In spring, follow the Dipper's handle: arc to Arcturus, then speed on to Spica. In summer the
Summer Triangle of Vega, Deneb and Altair rides overhead with the Milky Way running through Cygnus. In
autumn the Great Square of Pegasus leads to the Andromeda Galaxy. In winter Orion's belt points
down-left to Sirius and up-right to Aldebaran and the Pleiades.
Measure with your hand at arm's length: a closed fist spans about 10°, three middle fingers 5°, and a
little finger 1°. Planets never wander far from the ecliptic, the band the Sun and Moon follow, and they
shine steadily while stars twinkle. Southern-hemisphere observers: the same rules apply, but the sky is
flipped and the Southern Cross with its pointers replaces Polaris as the pole-finder.
Binoculars are the best first instrument: wide field, both eyes, no setup, and you already know how to
point them. The two numbers on the barrel are magnification × aperture. A 7×50 magnifies seven times
through 50 mm objectives; a 10×50 magnifies ten times through the same glass.
Exit pupil, aperture divided by magnification, tells you how bright the view is. A 7×50 gives a 7 mm
beam that fills a fully dark-adapted young eye; a 10×50 gives 5 mm, which suits most adults and darkens
the sky background a little. Both are good. Handheld shake grows with power, so stay at 10× or below
unless you have a tripod adapter or image stabilisation. Lighter 8×42 models are easier to hold steady
for long stretches.

Set them up once: close your right eye and focus the centre wheel on a star with the left, then close
the left and turn the right-eye diopter ring until that star is sharp. If you ever see a doubled image,
the barrels are out of alignment and should be repaired, not tolerated. Good first targets: the
Pleiades, the Hyades, the Moon's terminator, Jupiter's four bright moons, the Orion Nebula, the Double
Cluster, and the Coathanger asterism in Vulpecula.
Dark-adaptation checklist
Your retina's rod cells, the ones that see faint light, need time in darkness to reach full
sensitivity: noticeable gains after ten minutes, most of the way at twenty to thirty, and still improving
past forty-five. One glance at a white phone screen undoes much of it. Faint objects like galaxies and
nebulae only appear once adaptation is well underway, so judge the sky at the end of the session, not
the start. Use averted vision: look slightly to one side of a faint target so its light falls on
rod-rich retina rather than the cone-only centre.
